HARLAXTON MANOR
Be in awe of the Italian baroque Cedar Staircase, discover the bronze lions and uncover the inspiring story of Violet Van der Elst.
Harlaxton Manor
Harlaxton Manor, a striking example of 19th-century Jacobethan architecture, was constructed in the 1830s for Gregory Gregory, a wealthy Nottinghamshire businessman. The manor, designed by the architect Anthony Salvin, is renowned for its grand façade, elaborate interiors, and picturesque gardens.
The site of Harlaxton Manor has been occupied since the 14th century, with earlier buildings serving as residences for local nobility. Gregory’s vision for the manor was to create a modern interpretation of an Elizabethan country house, incorporating elements of Renaissance and Baroque styles. The result is a stunning blend of historical and architectural influences that make Harlaxton one of England’s most distinctive stately homes.
In the mid-20th century, Harlaxton Manor gained a new chapter in its history through the influence of Violet Van der Elst. Known as a formidable campaigner against the death penalty and a successful businesswoman, Van der Elst purchased Harlaxton Manor in 1937. She intended to restore and preserve the estate, investing significantly in its upkeep. However, her eccentric personality and financial difficulties eventually led to her selling the property in 1948. During her tenure, Van der Elst hosted grand parties and continued her activism, adding to the manor’s colorful history.
Following World War II, Harlaxton Manor was repurposed for various roles, including serving as a military hospital. Its expansive halls and rooms provided a place for recovery and convalescence for soldiers.
Today, Harlaxton Manor is owned by the University of Evansville and operates as a study-abroad center. The manor provides students with an immersive experience in British history and culture while preserving its rich legacy. The university’s stewardship ensures that Harlaxton’s architectural splendor and historical significance are maintained for future generations to appreciate.
