HeritageXplore Book Club: The Secret Rooms by Catherine Bailey with Emma, Duchess of Rutland

Virtual Event

On Wednesday 24th June, Emma, Duchess of Rutland, joins the HeritageXplore Book Club to discuss The Secret Rooms by Catherine Bailey, our first book club read of the year. This will be our third session exploring the book, where we will recap the story so far, discuss the final parts (7 and 8), and summarise our final thoughts. We’ll then have the chance for Q & A between book club members and the Duchess of Rutland.  A gripping work of historical detective writing, The Secret Rooms centres on John Manners, 9th Duke of Rutland - one of Britain's wealthiest men - who died alone in the family archives at Belvoir Castle in April 1940, having spent years carefully erasing three distinct periods of his life from the family records. Decades later, historian Catherine Bailey was granted rare access to those same rooms. Through letters, diaries and long-forgotten papers, she unravels a mystery at the heart of one of Britain's great aristocratic dynasties - revealing a world of family secrets, hidden scandal and royal intrigue in the turbulent years before the First World War. Drawing on her own experience as chatelaine of Belvoir Castle - the very estate at the heart of the book - the Duchess brings a uniquely personal perspective to this conversation. From the realities of preserving a great family archive and uncovering stories buried within it, to the enduring role of historic houses as custodians of memory, this promises to be a captivating evening that brings the book's world vividly to life. Join us for an evening of discovery, discussion and hidden histories - and the stories that lie behind closed doors.
