Tucked between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, Augill Castle is a Victorian fantasy made real - a 19th-century folly built in the 1840s for a industrialist who simply wanted a fairytale castle in the English countryside. That romantic, slightly impractical spirit has never left.
When the current owners arrived in 1997, Augill was a faded beauty: three guest bedrooms, a building in decline, and a great deal of potential. What followed wasn't a restoration project so much as an act of faith. The vision was to create something rarer than a hotel - a genuine country house where guests didn't just stay, but belonged. Where meals were shared, spaces were shared, and the life of the house itself was shared. Over the years, guests have become part of Augill's story, drawn not by polish or perfection, but by warmth, character and the particular pleasure of a place that feels genuinely lived-in.
Augill has never pretended to be pristine. With 148 windows and an acre of roof to maintain, it remains - joyfully, stubbornly - a work in progress. Original details that might elsewhere have been stripped out and replaced have been kept, because the scuffs and the stories are part of what makes the building speak.
Today, Augill Castle is exactly what its Victorian creator might have hoped for: a house full of life, a little eccentric, entirely welcoming - and still, after all these years, quietly magical.
