Located within the tranquil surrounds of the New Forest National Park, Beaulieu is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations. At its heart lie two exceptional landmarks: Palace House, the ancestral seat of the Montagu family, and the internationally renowned National Motor Museum.
Palace House began life as the 13th-century gatehouse to Beaulieu Abbey, before being granted to Sir Thomas Wriothesley following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Since 1538, it has remained in the Montagu family, evolving over the centuries into a fine example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. The house offers a rare opportunity to step inside a still-inhabited stately home, where family heirlooms, portraits, and period furnishings are presented alongside engaging personal stories. The interiors reflect both historical continuity and the family’s close involvement in the evolution of British motoring.
Just a short walk away is the National Motor Museum, founded in 1952 by Edward, 3rd Baron Montagu, as a tribute to his father—a motoring pioneer. Today, the museum houses over 280 vehicles that chart the development of motoring in Britain from its inception to the present day. From early motor carriages and Edwardian classics to land speed record breakers, Formula One icons, and culturally significant vehicles from film and television, the collection is unmatched in its breadth. The museum also features interactive exhibits and temporary displays that illuminate the social history and engineering breakthroughs behind each vehicle.
