About

Often called 'the English Versailles', Boughton House's remarkable story spans nearly five centuries, evolving from a modest monastery to one of Britain's grandest country estates. The transformation began in 1528 when Edward Montagu, a distinguished lawyer, acquired the former St Edmundsbury Abbey lands and incorporated its great hall into a new manor house.

The estate's French connection emerged in 1683 when Ralph Montagu, later 1st Duke of Montagu and former British Ambassador to France, inherited Boughton. Drawing inspiration from his diplomatic service in Paris, he infused the house with elegant French architectural influences. His son further enhanced the estate's grandeur by creating magnificent formal gardens, including a spectacular canal that remains a centerpiece of the parkland today.

The estate's fortunes took an intriguing turn when Lady Elizabeth Montagu married Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, a descendant of Charles II through the Duke of Monmouth. This union brought Boughton into the vast Buccleuch holdings, though the house entered a period of dormancy as the family focused on their Scottish estates. Today, Boughton stands proudly as one of the homes of Richard Montagu Douglas Scott, 10th Duke of Buccleuch and 12th Duke of Queensberry, its preserved splendor a testament to centuries of careful stewardship by one of Britain's most prominent landowning families.
