The Family

The title of Duke of Grafton was created in 1675 when King Charles II granted it to his illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy, born to his mistress Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. In 1672, Henry married Isabella Arlington, daughter and heiress of Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington. Through this marriage, the FitzRoy family acquired the Euston Estate - along with substantial London holdings in what is now Fitzrovia - and Euston has remained the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Grafton ever since.

The village of Euston itself appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, and by the 15th century a manor house stood on the site. In 1666, Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington and Secretary of State to Charles II, purchased the property and transformed it into a grand residence in the fashionable French style. The picturesque courtyard visitors enter today was originally Arlington's stable block, later converted to form the main entrance and service wing.

In 1750, the 2nd Duke commissioned the distinguished architect Matthew Brettingham - known for his work on Holkham Hall in Norfolk—to remodel the house, refining it into an elegant Palladian mansion. Disaster struck in 1902 when fire destroyed the South and West wings. The family's invaluable art collection and many treasured possessions were saved, but the Hall was forever changed. Since 2012, the 12th Duke of Grafton has undertaken an ambitious restoration programme, breathing new life into both the Hall and its historic grounds.
