About

Located just under an hour from London, the Hellfire Caves, nestled beneath the grounds of West Wycombe Park, have a fascinating and somewhat notorious history. Commissioned in the mid-18th century by Sir Francis Dashwood, founder of the infamous Hellfire Club, the caves were originally excavated to provide employment for local farmers during a time of agricultural depression.

The caves quickly became a venue for the Hellfire Club’s secretive meetings, where members engaged in debauchery and irreverent activities far from prying eyes. These underground chambers, carved into the chalk hills, extend over a mile and are rich in myth and legend, with tales of ghostly apparitions and hidden rituals.

West Wycombe Park itself, a stunning example of Palladian architecture, was designed by Sir Francis Dashwood and reflects his eccentric tastes and penchant for the exotic. The house and its surrounding gardens offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the 18th-century English elite. Today, the Hellfire Caves are a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours that delve into the intriguing and often scandalous history of the Hellfire Club and its enigmatic founder.
