About

Trewithen, meaning "house of the trees", is a place of quiet historical and architectural significance, nestled within 30 acres of mature woodland and 200 acres of organic parkland in rural Cornwall.

The house appears at the top of a slope, with stable blocks framing the forecourt. A finely proportioned example of 18th-century Palladian architecture, Trewithen is crafted from Cornwall’s characteristic pink Pentewan granite. Its origins can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086, though it was in 1715 that Philip Hawkins acquired the estate and began its transformation.

The house owes its design to two notable London architects: Thomas Hawkins who rebuilt the structure between 1715 and 1725, and Sir Robert Taylor, who redesigned the interiors in the 1740s. Taylor’s work includes the Great Saloon, an exceptional Rococo creation considered a masterpiece of the southwest. Spanning the full width of the south front’s five bays, the room is distinguished by Ionic columns and intricate plasterwork, underscoring Taylor’s reputation as a leading architect of his time.

Today, Trewithen remains a cherished family home and has been lovingly maintained by its current custodians, Sam and Kitty Galsworthy. Their recent restoration efforts have achieved a delicate balance, blending the house’s heritage with the comforts and aesthetics of modern living.

The gardens at Trewithen are equally notable, renowned for their botanical diversity and historical significance. The collection includes species introduced by pioneering plant hunters, alongside Champion Trees that have flourished under generations of stewardship. Noteworthy features include the recently restored Eagle Ponds, the walled garden, and sculptural additions such as Henheadow Circle, crafted from historical estate materials. These gardens are a living legacy, evolving with the seasons and offering both a sense of continuity and moments of quiet reflection to all who visit.
