History
Harlaxton Manor, a striking example of 19th-century Jacobethan architecture, was constructed in the 1830s for Gregory Gregory, a wealthy Nottinghamshire businessman. The manor, designed by the architect Anthony Salvin, is renowned for its grand façade, elaborate interiors, and picturesque gardens.
The site of Harlaxton Manor has been occupied since the 14th century, with earlier buildings serving as residences for local nobility. Gregory’s vision for the manor was to create a modern interpretation of an Elizabethan country house, incorporating elements of Renaissance and Baroque styles. The result is a stunning blend of historical and architectural influences that make Harlaxton one of England’s most distinctive stately homes.
In the 20th century, Harlaxton Manor served various roles, including as a military hospital during World War II. Today, it is owned by the University of Evansville and operates as a study-abroad center, providing students with an immersive experience in British history and culture while preserving the manor’s legacy.
