The Best Autumn Walks at Historic Ηouses

With autumn now upon us (perhaps arriving a little sooner than we anticipated) we thought it would be the perfect time to highlight some of the most breathtaking autumnal walks available at HeritageXplore’s historic houses. As the leaves turn golden and the landscapes transform, these walks offer the ideal opportunity to soak in the beauty of the season while exploring the rich heritage and natural surroundings of Britain's finest stately homes.

Mount Stuart, Lime Tree Avenue

Planted originally in 1734, with possible replanting in 1812, Lime Tree Avenue at Mount Stuart stretches over 540 meters and boasts more than 160 majestic trees. While the avenue is often celebrated for its full bloom in June and July, when the smell of flowers fills the air, autumn brings its own special charm. As the sunlight filters through the canopy, the leaves of the lime trees turn a rich, warm gold, falling gently to the ground and transforming the avenue into a glowing path of autumnal beauty. It’s a sight that captures the season’s quiet magic, inviting visitors to take a peaceful stroll and enjoy the changing landscape.

Belvoir Castle, The Duchess Garden Walk

As autumn sets in, the Duchess Garden – once known as the Ladies Garden, a peaceful haven for women—comes alive with vibrant colours and delightful fragrances. Nestled on the steep slopes, you'll find a range of rare shrubs and trees, making this garden a true autumn gem. Come and discover the fascinating Blue Sausage Tree, which bears its striking blue, sausage-shaped fruits in September and October. These unusual fruits are truly a marvel and not to be missed! Another must-see is the Katsura tree, native to Japan. Its heart-shaped leaves are lovely, but what truly sets it apart is the delightful burnt sugar or candy floss scent it releases in autumn— catch a whiff under its branches and you are definitely going to be craving something sweet from the cafe!

Holkham Hall, The Obelisk and The Temple

Take a stroll through the crisp autumn air to the towering Obelisk, standing 25 meters tall. A key feature of the hall’s landscape, the Obelisk rises majestically at the end of the South Avenue, where visitors would first glimpse the imposing mansion through the golden canopy. As you get closer, try to spot the classical details, including the Greek key design carved into the stone. Then, continue your autumnal walk to The Temple, tucked away in a peaceful woodland clearing. The neoclassical design, inspired by Thomas Coke’s love of Roman architecture, feels even more enchanting as it’s surrounded by trees. The rustling leaves underfoot and the soft light filtering through the branches make this a truly magical, romantic experience.
