The Best Miniature Railways at Historic Homes

Hop aboard for a journey through some of Britain’s most enchanting and nostalgic miniature railways! Dating back to the mid-19th century, these charming railways were first built on private estates, beginning with Lord Robert Rodney’s creation in 1843 at Alresford, Hampshire—just as Queen Victoria ascended the throne. Another pioneer, Sir Arthur Heywood, built a 9-inch gauge railway on his father’s estate in Staffordshire in 1865, powered by hand at first. Over in Scotland, a railway was established on the Ardkinglas Estate in Argyll around 1866, rumored to have been an 18-inch gauge. Queen Victoria herself visited the estate in 1875, though we can’t say for sure if she took a ride! Miniature railways have long been a beloved feature of these historic estates, and some of the best are still in operation today. Whether you’re reliving history or creating new memories, they offer fun for all ages and a unique way to experience the beauty and stories of Britain’s grandest estates.
