Discover the Wolterton Arts & Culture Programme: A New Era of Creativity in Norfolk
Hidden from view in the heart of North Norfolk, the magnificent and enigmatic Wolterton Hall - a rarely seen Grade I-listed Palladian estate - is entering an exciting new chapter. This year, the historic house is launching its Arts & Culture Programme, a bold initiative designed to fuse contemporary artistic innovation with centuries of heritage. Whether you're a lover of visual art, a heritage enthusiast, or simply curious about unique cultural experiences in Norfolk, the Wolterton Arts & Culture Programme promises to inspire.
A Contemporary Programme in a Historic Setting
Wolterton Hall has long been recognised for its historical significance and architectural beauty, with roots tracing back to the Walpole family and Britain’s early political history. Now, with the launch of its art and culture programme, the estate will become a platform for modern artistic expression, offering a compelling new reason to visit this corner of East Anglia (in case you needed any incentivisation).
The initiative, curated by Simon Oldfield Art Associates, brings together leading artists, curators, and creative thinkers in an environment that invites reflection and dialogue between past and present.

'Sea State' – A Landmark Inaugural Exhibition
The programme opens on 11th June 2025 with Sea State, an evocative exhibition exploring our relationship with the ocean. Featuring new work by celebrated British artists Maggi Hambling and Ro Robertson, the show will be staged within the historic interiors of Wolterton’s Marble Hall and Portrait Room.
Curated by Simon Oldfield and Gemma Rolls-Bentley, Sea State sets the tone for the programme’s ambition - bringing cutting-edge work into immersive, heritage-rich settings. Themes of nature, transformation, and emotion are explored in relation to the sea, adding a powerful layer of resonance to the architectural surroundings.
Digital Access and Public Engagement
To ensure wider access, Wolterton Hall is collaborating with Art UK and Bloomberg Connects, offering free digital access to both its historic collections and new exhibitions. Highlights include the recently acquired Gainsborough portrait of Maria Walpole, on view as part of the house’s expanding interpretation of its own story.
This move positions Wolterton not just as a private heritage destination, but as an active contributor to the national cultural conversation.

A Cultural Destination in Norfolk
With its artist-led programming, immersive exhibitions, and bold use of historic space, the Wolterton Arts & Culture Programme marks a cultural renaissance for one of Norfolk’s most distinguished estates. Perfect for visitors looking to explore contemporary art in heritage settings, this is one of 2025’s must-visit cultural experiences.
